The Scream 7 Drama: When Fandom, Politics, and Hollywood Collide
If you know me, you know I’ve been a massive Scream fan since the original movie dropped in 1996. When they changed the cast for Scream 5 (2022) and Scream 6 (2023), I had absolutely no problem with it. The franchise was evolving, the new blood was great, and we were all just happy to be back in Woodsboro.
But then, the Scream 7 drama started, and the internet completely lost its mind.
First, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the firing of the lead actress from Scream 5 and 6, Melissa Barrera. Let me be clear right out of the gate—I completely disagree with how she was fired. She was let go because of her political posts supporting Palestine. I believe people have every right to support whatever they want, and I honestly don't understand why expressing support for Palestine becomes such a massive, career-ending issue in Hollywood. It felt wrong, and fans had every right to be upset with the studio over that decision.
But here is where things started getting messy. Following the fallout, Neve Campbell—our original, undisputed Scream Queen—announced she was returning for Scream 7. I was thrilled! But instead of celebrating, a massive faction of the internet started attacking the fans who were excited, even going as far as calling people who supported Scream 7 "racist."
Why are people hating on Neve? She is a genuinely nice actress and the foundational pillar of this entire franchise. More importantly, why are fans taking their anger out on the Scream legacy instead of holding the studio accountable?
I used to be a fan who supported Melissa, but her recent interviews are full of contradictions, and honestly, they are quite disappointing. Let’s break down the things that just don't make sense:
1. The Contract Contradiction In a recent interview, Melissa explicitly said she only signed on for two movies. She stated she was "fine" with it, noting that she got to do two films and that’s more than most people get. But if she fulfilled her contract and was genuinely happy with it, why is she lashing out now? Flipping the narrative from "I'm totally fine" to holding a public grudge really hurts her credibility.
2. The Box Office Denial Melissa recently claimed that she thinks the studio "lied about the numbers" for Scream 7 and that it didn't actually make that much money. Scream 7 pulled in $207 million USD at the global box office—making it one of the highest-grossing in the franchise. Accusing the studio of faking these numbers is basically insulting the entire box office tracking system. The studio doesn't count the money; third parties like Box Office Mojo do. Why would an independent tracking system lie for the studio? Saying things like this just makes her look like a sore loser.
3. The Nostalgia Hypocrisy She also shaded the actors who appeared in Scream 7, claiming they crossed a picket line and that the only way the movie was made was by relying on "nostalgia-bait." This is wildly hypocritical. Scream 5 and 6relied heavily on the past too! They literally used Stu Macher’s house as the main location for the climax. Trashing your peers in Hollywood like this is a surefire way to make people not want to work with you.
4. The "No Industry Support" Claim Finally, Melissa claimed that no one in the industry reached out to her after everything went down. But that directly contradicts public statements made by her co-stars. Jasmin Savoy Brown (who was a core cast member in Scream 5 and 6) clearly stated in an interview that the cast still talks and supports each other. So, who are we supposed to believe?
Final Thoughts (And a Message to My Mentions) Melissa Barrera is incredibly talented, but lashing out in interviews, throwing shade at peers, and making baseless claims about box office numbers only ruins her own image and future opportunities. It’s a waste of talent.
As for the people currently coming for me? If supporting Scream 7 makes me a bad person, please, go right ahead and think that. You guys clearly want me to be the ultimate villain for supporting my favorite horror franchise, so feel free to cast me in that role if it makes you feel better. If I'm so horrible and you can't handle it, the block button is completely free to use. Otherwise, enjoy the therapy session in my replies. Your engagement pays my bills anyway. 💅
